Sunday seemed to start even hotter than Saturday with the U7’s, U11’s and U15’s taking part.

There were 18 sides in the U11’s competition so there were some nervous waits to see who would be the 2 best placed 3^rd placed sides. All side which managed to get their points tally into double figures qualified for the quarter finals which then saw Wickham Reds play Radley and Pinewood Pumas play Calne B in the semi Final. Both games were close but Wickham got revenge for their earlier League defeat beating Radley 1-0 and Pinewood beat Calne by the same score. In the final Wickham seemed to have the better of the game but in the last minute with one of their players down Pinewood scored the vital goal to win 1-0.

A full 20 teams contested the U15’s section with all four group winners making their way through to the semi finals, amazingly with all games finishing at exactly the same time and all the scores 1-0. Kidlington B were too strong for Radley B as Radley seemed to run out of steam going down 3-0 whilst Woodley Wanderers were able to beat Devizes 1-0. The final was just a game too many for Woodley who had been playing most of the tournament with only 6 players due to one of there number badly dislocating his wrist and requiring immediate hospital treatment as Kiddlington ran out 2-0 winners.

Sunday afternoon saw 16 sides in both the U12’s and the U16 age groups so the three League matches which each side played would determined who everyone would play in a 16 side knockout tournament.

In the U16’s section League form was confirmed as the winners and runners up of each group mane it through to the quarter finals. Wickham surprising beat Croft A in the 1^st quarter final with Feltham A and Croft B also going through but the all London battle between Croydon and Feltham B turned into a great game as Croydon (the winners of this tournament at U14 and U15’s level over the last two years) had to come from behind, eventually winning 3-2 in extra time. Wickham gave a good account of themselves in their semi final against Croydon, going down 1-0 but the Feltham A v Croft B game was a stiff battle, which eventually went to penalties which Croft won 2-0. The only down side for croft was one of their players was booked and therefore had to miss the final. This was again a great game of football with Croydon taking the lead with a goal created from slick passing and movement. Croft however continued to battle getting the equalizer in the dying moments of the 2^nd half. Extra time could not split the sides so it was to penalties. With 5 penalties gone the score was 1-1. Croft keeper them became their Hero saving the 6^th penalty to keep them in the final, converting his own spot kick and then saving the 8^th penalty of the shoot out giving Croft B a 2-1 victory.

In the U12’s section again League form was confirmed in the knockout stages as all group winners and runners up made it though to the quarter finals. The semi finals saw Childrey B lose 2-0 to Abbey Meads and then Eldon Celtic beat Winklebury by the same score. These two sides had almost identical records in getting to the final so as expected it was a close game. After extra time neither side had scored so it was down to penalties. Both scored their 1^st and 3^rd penalties so it was then sudden death. Both teams cleared the bar with their 4^th attempts and again it was the keeper to become the hero as first of all the Eldon keeper saved the Abbey Meads penalty then coolly slotted his own penalty kick away for Eldon two win 3-2.

Day 1 Photos

On a glorious weekend 129 teams competed in the Wickham Wanderers Six a Side Tournament. First up in the competitive section were the twelve U14’s and ten U9’s sides.

Group 1 of the U9’s was a highly competitive division with the top 4 teams only separated by 3 points but Radley A and Grove A made it through to the semi finals. In the second group only 1 game was won by more than 1 goal with Ardington A and Grove B qualifying. Unfortunately for Grove both of their sides lost in the semi leaving Radley and Ardington to play a very competitive final with Radley running out the 1-0 winners.

In the U14’s section Wickham Reds dominated the group winning it without conceding a goal. Second place was between Thatcham Harriers and Killington but a 0-0 draw in this game gave the Oxford side the second semi final place. Purton were leading the 2^nd group with 11 points also not having conceded a goal leaving Wickham Blues needing a win over Devizes to top the group, however a 0-0 draw meant they would play their Red team in the Semi final, but they also had not conceded a goal so something would have to give. The Wickham Red team beat their Blue team 1-0 and Kiddlington also won their semi final against Purton by the same score. Wickham dominated the final beating Kiddlington 2-0.

As the day heated up it was the turn of the U10’s and U13’s. The U10’s competition saw the League rounds determine who would play each other in the Knockout competition which then came down to Burghfield losing 1-0 to Garsington in the first semi final and then Thatcham Harriers A beating Newbury B by the same score in the other semi. In the final Harriers stepped up their game a notch or two running out comfortable 4-0 winners…the most goals scored in a final all weekend.

18 teams contested the U13’s competition, with Eldon Celtic, Greenmeadow B, Cumnor A and Southside (last years U12’s winners) going through to the quarterfinals undefeated; however Southside were well beaten 3-0 by Greenmeadow with the other three sides joined in the semi final by Cumnor B. Eldon beat the Cumnor B side 1-0 in the first semi but Greenmeadow needed penalties to beat Cumnor A 3-2 to qualify for the final. The final was a very good climax to the day with Eldon eventually running out 2-0 winners.

Wickham Wanderers U10s - North Wilts League Champions!

Congratulations to the Under 10's who won the North Wilts league champions at the County Ground, Swindon (home of Swindon Town FC). Goals from Owen Guest and Harvey Tooth saw the team go into the half time break ahead 2-1. A lead they held until the final whistle to become league champions.

Welcome to 2010!

As we're approaching half way through the season, the start of the new year sees all the teams in the top half of their respective leagues with several contesting for the top spot. we also have teams still contesting cup competitions. Unfortunately the cold weather has started hitting fixtures, so keep an eye on the club website and on the North Wilts League website for each team where any changes will be posted.

With the new year it also means the 6-a-side tournament is rapidly approaching - May 22nd & 23rd. It will be crucial that all parents & friends of the club help out with this major fund raising event. Without help, the club won't be able to continue operation or will have to significantly increase fees.

Good luck to all teams for the remainder of the season.

Training now at John O'Gaunt School

Ray Winstone has reiterated his backing of The FA's Respect programme by appearing in a second film to highlight the pressure put on young players. In the latest film Winstone speaks candidly about how it's time that the minority of pushy parents should 'give it a rest'.
